Vancouver's Carvers' Diaries 2017/18

20 cm new overnight on a quiet Monday morning. It was pow laps all morning. I was still finding lines with fresh snow off sky chair on my last run at 3 PM. What a day.

The 3800 and the proto win the day. Never rode them back to back before but I find that the 3800 wins on flotation but the proto is much better in tight trees.

Sounds like great fun ^

We had some pow here at Louise too. Place is pretty huge, didn't see even a 1/4 of it yet, but we are sticking to specific runs due to the exam format.

I'm already exhausted - almost no riding for a month shows big time...

Ha my other post from Wednesday disappeared in domain transfer.  Here it goes:

Famous underwear tree:

And super steeps from a ridge hikeable from the peak. Photo doesn't quite show the steepness. Look how small are people directly under us...

Pow that was on forecast never happened, at leat not until 1pm when I was leaving, when it started snowing heavily.

Otherwise, snow was really carvable today, just a little soft.

Toy: WCRM 173

I even jumped few 360s on the bloody thing. Why I couldn't do it on a much easier board during L4 exam?!? Pressre I guess...

Just finished working in Revelstoke for the past week, doing some high angle rescue training and consulting work for BC Hydro at two of their hydroelectric dam sites. One of these dam sites, Mica Dam is at the end of a road that cuts through the Monashees and Adam Ant mountain ranges- CMH, Mike Wiegle, Tyax all have heli lodges and cat skiing operations along this stretch.

Mica Dam is the only BC Hydro site that has its own alpine ski lodge, heli ski and cat operation, all for avalanche control for the site (of course). Our tax dollars and their smart meters at work, I guess.

It’s been a blast to work there from 7:30-3PM, then change quickly into outdoor gear and grab a snowmobile, cat or heli lift up to some awesome powder runs, that the other lodge heli ski clients spend thousands of dollars on.

I’m skiing Revelstoke mountain reosort tomorrow, and driving back Saturday.

These are some of the days when I think I have the best job in the world.

Blackcomb was glorious today. Fresh tracks and sun on Blackcomb Glacier and Lakeside Bowl until we broke for lunch at 1pm. Normally, I would have been softbooting, but the weather report underestimated the amount of fresh. First day for me hardbooting in pow, and it was surprisingly pleasant. I would have preferred softboots on the crunchy moguls that were not fully covered, but overall I was super pleased about hardbooting. Yesterday, Springboard and Ross' Gold were boilerplate and I just couldn't keep my speed in check, but the layer of fresh today made it perfect, and snow was light enough that I could blast through the chop. It will be a carvers paradise tomorrow morning.

Rod and I had a blast today at Cypress! 20ish cm of fresh chowder and we were still finding the freshies until the lunch time. Humpty, Horizon and Collins were groomed and very carvable. Moguls on the Boven Face were absolutely yummy and then the Midway like a huge carpet of fresh wet snow!

We had a big crew today: Rod, Gary, Patrick, Nikita, B, Luka who didn't want to socialise with us and my mom (visiting from Europe) as support :)

Snow was weird in the am, not quite frozen, not quite soft and not quite groomed... Later it softened into normal playfull spring mess.

The highlight off the day was the run out via Olympic Bumps, where we found fresh, untouched, yesterday's snow! Nikita broke his rear (luckily) binding, and had to walk down that last run...

We finished of with lunch at cafeteria and pub, then a short tailgate picnic with few shots of Glenlivet, for the road ;)

Successful day...

I think that's it for the season, for our crew...

As some of you already knew, the OES snowboards have built a new all-mountain board, to my design. The first prototypes are here, and I'm going to test ride them at the Blackcomb Glacier, this Sunday. Everyone is welcome to join/try.

More about boards:

They are designed to be very versatile all-mountain boards (from carve to pow), primarily for hard boots. Softies could work, but only at very high forward angles...

Specs: L 167, W 23, Sidecut 8-10. There's a fair bit of rocker/decamber in the nose and just a bit in the tail, camber in the middle. Nose and taper are big, for pow and slush... We have 3 flexes: Medium, Soft and Extra Soft, for everyone's taste/weight.

Construction is Kevlar on wood core, with high end base.
