National Snowboard Rankings (Feb 2013)

Recommended Posts

I do this just for my own curiosity. Everyone (male and 1 female*) with an under 37 handicap that has raced enough to have a national ranking this season.

Yes this would be easy for NASTAR to do but they don't.

I suspect Mark Hogan will soon be eligible for that list. Mark is an Aspen local who has his sights on the NASTAR Nationals in the 50-54 division. I raced against him yesterday at Snowmass, his third NASTAR day. He's climbed from bronze, to silver, to both gold runs yesterday (31.7 & 32.17 handicap).

Cool list, but I've found over the years it's hard to completely compare the NASTAR lists. It is a better way than some, but a lot of top racers don't do NASTAR, and it also doesn't differentiate between races run on snowboard gates and skier gates. A good example is my handicap (Brett Nemke on your list). Those races are all in our local race league on skier gates. I'm a lot faster on snowboard gates, yet I know there are a lot of people a lot faster than me in the USASA circuit.

Either way, it is a cool comparison.

NASTAR does give snowboarders a -10 handicap adjustment to compensate for the gates. I'd rather see them just use snowboard gates for everyone and give us a handicap based on some statistical testing based on data from their pacesetter meets. They'd have to recruit some snowboard pacesetters, at least for those meets. I bet a lot of casual skiers would prefer snowboard gates, too. I don't see many folks wearing guards and slamming the NASTAR gates.

The skiers at my local hill really dislike the stubbies. The course director usually sets up a course with stubbies for me each season... feels so weird to go over the gates rather than through the gates! Most of the "serious" folks at my hill wear guards or padding.

But the USASA circuit is so limited compared to NASTAR. But yes it has it's pitfalls and at the same time so cheap and widely available.

Anyway I do this for my own reasons and figured other's would like to see. I did it last year in Feb and then and the end of the season and I plan to do the same this season.

IF I hadn't done it I wouldn't have known Ms. Herde is having fun in that laughable Park City course... so straight and flat.. oh my!

A couple of years ago I petitioned Pat Moore on the NASTAR forum for exactly the same thing. I proposed phasing out the skier gates in favor of snowboard friendly triangular ones that everyone could use. (No reason skiers can't use them, especially with the newer carving race posture!) Brilliant, right? Wrong. Pat said that skiers have a negative reaction to the snowboard gates and suggested that it would hurt participation. Ah, tradition.

As for the list, it is cool, even though I'm not on it. All of us love to debate the accuracy of the handicaps--an admittedly flawed system. But one thing that NASTAR is great for is tracking your own progress, and your results, with different boards, bindings, angles, etc.

Once a season the NASTAR group will bring out the stubby gates (it was going to happen last Wednesday until a skier took out our racing mountain ops guy while he was setting up the course (no, I'm not kidding!).).:angryfire:( The younger skiers love the small gates but the adult racers HATE the gates... feel like their going to get tripped up or some such.

NASTAR is flawed but it is the most wide-spread racing around. I'd love to do USASA or the like but the nearest GS event was 8 hours away! So NASTAR it is, for me.

If you ever think all NASTAR courses are easy and flat I invite you to come to Paoli Peaks... not so easy.

Head to head racing is the final determination... I'm down are you? :ices_ange

PS- I'll post a "final" of all the snowboarders later this month.

Good Lord! Did I say that? If so, I was clearly in error. About five years ago Whiteface started setting one course with snowboard gates and the reaction among skiers was positive. I started doing it the next year and have continued ever since. Setting the actual triangular panels and keeping the panels attached is a pain so I usually just set stubbies. Not too many racers have difficulty figuring out which side to go around. This year NASTAR introduced slalom and sent participating mountains a supply of very flexible stubbies with brush heads. They're very popular with snowboarders and skiers alike. A handful of traditionalists were holding out but most have made at least a few runs on the stubbies course and I've gotten no negative comments. I'll set one course with them both days this coming weekend if you find yourself in the neighborhood.

This past Saturday, our slope was reserved for a rail jam competition so I had a rare day off and went to Sunapee for a snowboard race clinic. I asked the local NASTAR folks if they'd set one course with the new stubbies and they obliged. I'd encourage all venues that set dual courses to give it a try.

#1 and #3 on that list are mostly times (or completely times) set on skier gates in a skier league.

And of coarse Heather Herde is a girl and faster then your skiier gate runs on a skiier gate coarse....She did have a great coach though.. Nastar, is cute!

NASTAR isn't as standardized as one would hope... the Mt. Bachelor course was so flat and easy there was nothing separating the men from the boys. My results from 09/10... see what I mean?

I wouldn't be surprised if everyone on the list above is faster than I am... in fact my Aspen Highlands runs would suggest as much. (OK, I am faster now than 3 years ago...)

NASTAR has it's flaws. NASTAR is the largest snowboard race circuit in the US with more competitors than any other... does this make up for its flaws. No.

It's still fun though. I challenge every BOL member to race NASTAR on two separate days next season. It's cheap and it's fun.

I've gathered up the last list this season. If you were first in your age group, males & females, your on the list. I put the cut-off at 35.99 for everyone else. Why? Seemed like a natural place.

The notes is to highlight some of the outliers of the group. Speedy women with olympic dreams, 70-74 year olds who are fast, etc.

One final observation... snowboarding kids don't race (very small attendance). Unless we can attract more youth riders we may be the last of our kind.

On an up note... way to go Mark Temple!

And of coarse Heather Herde is a girl and faster then your skiier gate runs on a skiier gate coarse....She did have a great coach though.. Nastar, is cute!

Agreed, she did have a great coach.

Go ahead, Bordy, make fun of NASTAR, but you can't argue with the low entry barriers and the high level of participation. It got me interested at the age of 49!!! And . . . where else are most of us going to get regular timed gate practice unless we're a sponsored World Cup racer? In fact, maybe you should get involved. Swallow your pride, and go out and lay down a few runs. Just take it easy and try not to make the rest of us look too bad, okay?

There are race programs all over, saying th options are NASTAR or World Cup , seems a little silly. NASTAR coarses are a great way to introduce people to racing. They teach very little, and are just a place to pay for timing, they are great fun, and a great way to race your friends. But the only way to find out who is fast and who is not is to all race together on the same hill on the same day, the funds needed to travel to NASTAR, nationals is the same as going to usasa nationals. However they are much different levels of talent.

Enjoy what ever sliding down how ever you personally want.. Having fun is the important part.

The speed/talents of B. Bordy should not be challenged so... he's demonstrated his capabilities on the world stage. ( Even in other disciplines!

) His post (above) was excellent.

I hope my postings aren't being interpreted as these are the fastest BOL members because they are not. There's several BOL member's who could wipe the stage with most of us and are not ever going to do NASTAR. (another example: Nyberg)

I wouldn't do NASTAR (as much) if USASA was accessible to me but it is not... nor is it accessible to a good percentage of our members, unfortunately. I don't do NASTAR nationals or USASA nationals for the very reason Billy mentioned, expense. Maybe someday.

I do have fun going through the gates so I'll continue. NASTAR allows me to have some comparability with my BOL peers therefore my list.

I see racing as one of the last methods of publicity and innovation for HB snowboarding. If racing dies tomorrow where will be the next plate, next Kessler or a new boot design (I know we're never getting a new boot, ever.)?!

So go race in your beer leagues or wherever, just race if it's fun.

Props to Mark Hogan and Mark Temple for their fast Raw times.

Nice work at the NASTAR "Race of Champions".
